Five killed in horror day on NSW roads - ABC Online

It has been a deadly day on New South Wales roads this Boxing Day, with five people killed and more injured.

Two died and five were injured when a seven-seater Nissan Patrol left the road and rolled this morning, about six kilometres north of Holbrook on the Hume Highway between Gundagai and Albury.

A couple visiting from Fiji, both 70, were killed, and a 14-year-old boy was airlifted to Canberra Hospital with head injuries. He remains in a critical condition.

A 67-year-old woman was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne hospital in a serious condition.

The driver and two other passengers escaped with minor injuries.

All five injured are from the same family, from Chisholm in the ACT.

Police spokeswoman Joanne Elliot says investigators are still working to determine what caused the crash.

"There were obviously a lot of people in that vehicle," she said.

"There's a major police and emergency services response."

The crash happened just before 7:00am (AEDT), minutes after a two-car collision at Marsden Park in Sydney's north-west that claimed the life of one man.

This afternoon, two men died in separate accidents when cars smashed into trees.

One man was killed in Abernethy, in the state's Hunter region, when his car left the road and hit a tree about 2:30pm.

Near Mudgee, in the state's west, a male passenger was found dead inside a car that had hit a tree.

Police say the injured driver was able to walk to a nearby property to raise an alert before being airlifted to hospital.

The Ambulance Service says it has been a "horror day" on the state's roads and urged drivers to slow down.

Meanwhile, a motorcycle rider is in a critical condition after crashing while being chased by police near Heatherbrae north of Newcastle.

Officers gave chase after they failed to stop the man just after 11:30am.

The motorcycle rider was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Police say they have opened an investigation into the matter.
