A HORROR day on the roads yesterday left five people dead -- all from NSW -- and brought the national road toll to 16.
Two NSW men died in separate accidents yesterday afternoon after their cars hit trees, one east of Newcastle in the Hunter Valley, the other at Hargraves, in the state's central west. The fatalities brought the NSW toll to six.
The driver in the accident at Hargraves was taken to hospital while emergency services worked for some time to free the passenger, who suffered fatal injuries.
A 70-year-old Fijian couple died after the 4WD they were passengers in rolled on the Hume Highway yesterday near Holbrook, in southern NSW.

Queensland's first holiday road death came after a sedan veered off the Bruce Highway near Townsville, in the state's northeast, killing the male driver, the car's only occupant.
Victoria Police expect to lay charges over a Christmas Day collision when a sedan slammed into a taxi that had been stopped at traffic lights in Geelong, killing the male cab driver.
The man, a father of five, had stopped at traffic lights not far from his home when an out-of-control Holden Commodore slammed into his taxi.
He died at the scene while the young male Commodore driver, who escaped injury, was quizzed by police for several hours before being released pending further inquiries.
