Unions to count job losses - ABC Online

Posted March 22, 2013 07:55:07

Unions say they hope to find out how many public service jobs have been lost in the Hunter since the O'Farrell government took office as early as next week.

Newcastle Trades Hall Council and Unions New South Wales are tabelling hundreds of report cards they have given out surveying public sector job losses after government cuts to education and health funding.

The unions say they will take the figures to local MPs Tim Owen and Robyn Parker.

Trade Halls Council secretary Gary Kennedy says it is an important project.

"There's been up to 1500 returned state-wide and we've launched the Newcastle specific report card in the last few days, so those reports have started to come in," he said.

"Hopefully we can collect some proper figures by Tuesday, but definitely in the next two weeks we'll have a much better idea - firstly on how the community's feeling, and exactly the number of cuts and resource cuts that have occurred in the Hunter."
