Bison thinclads open season in Newcastle - Rapid City Journal

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. – The Hot Springs Bison boys’ and girls’ track and field teams saw their first action of the season last Thursday in Newcastle, Wyo., where they competed in a 12-team invitational and had a number of athletes place in the top-eight.

Hot Springs’ boys were fifth overall while the girls finished seventh. First place went to Custer in the boys’ race and Hill City in the girls’.

The Bison girls were led by a first place finish by the 4x800 meter relay team in a time of 10:47. Team members included Whitney Hamilton, Zoey Osmotherly, Sable Simmons and Camille Maciejewski.

Individually, senior Mary Ginsbach placed second in the discus (120 feet, 1 inch) and then fifth in the shot put (31-10). Her throw in the discus also surpassed the state’s in-season qualifying mark, which already puts her in the state meet in Sioux Falls/Lennox at the end of May.

In the distance races, Leah Deering finished second in the two-mile with a time of 12:49, while in the hurdles Alyssa Lockhart was third in the 100-meter hurdles with :17.55.

The sprints saw Hot Springs earn three placings as Hannah Cantrell was sixth in the 100-meters (:15.0) and eighth in the 200-meters (:29.0).

Camille Maciejewski also placed fifth in the 800-meter run.

In the boys’ competition, Eric Yager placed second in the 800-meters with a time of 2:04.63, missing the in-season state meet qualifying mark of 2:04 by less than a second. Yager was also fifth in the 200-meters with a time of :24.95, which was his first-ever attempt in the sprint event.

“Yeah, I think Eric really surprised some people in that event,” said Hot Springs head coach John Entwisle.

In other track events, Grant Russell was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of :46.62. Tristian Old Horse, the only eighth-grader on the varsity team, finished sixth in the two-mile with a time of 11:30.

The Bison boys then had three athletes place in field events as junior Hunter Pulscher took second place in the shot put with a toss of 46-feet. David Nelson took third place in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches while Jake Oberpriller was sixth in the long jump with an 18 feet, 9 inche effort.

“We went into this meet wanting to see where everyone was at,” said coach Entwisle. “And we got a lot of answers. There were some pretty outstanding performances, especially by some of our younger athletes.”

In addition to the competitors already mentioned, who finished in the top-eight, Entwisle said freshman Lawrence Saucerman also had a good meet and put some strong times in both the 100 and the 400-meters.

This Friday, the team will travel to Spearfish and likely have athletes competing in some different events as they continue to see how the pieces will fit together as the season progresses.

“We’re still trying to figure things out as we work towards Regions,” said Entwisle. “All of these other meets are really just practice.”
