Newcastle is Australia's oldest port and one of the world's largest coal export ports - there are also more than 40 different commodities that operate out of the harbour in addition to coal such as grain, alumina, woodchips and fertiliser.
The port has a rich history and has changed significantly over the years - today there is about 20 billion dollars of trade per year in the port.
There are around 2,200 people working directly to the port currently - this will grow to 4,500 in 5 years.
1233 ABC Newcastle took a tour of the port with CEO of Newcastle Port Corporation Gary Webb - they stopped near Kooragang Island in what is known as the "turning circle" for a 360 degree view.
