Police investigate a fatal crash north of Newcastle this morning.
About 7am (Thursday 16 January 2014), police from Newcastle Local Area Command and other emergency services responded to reports of a collision between two vehicles on Maitland Road, Hexam, north of Newcastle.
On arrival officers found a small sedan had hit the rear of a van. The driver, a woman and sole occupant, was found deceased.
The occupants of the van were uninjured the driver was taken to The Mater hospital for mandatory drug and urine testing.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision.
Investigators are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
