Regal Cinema on its Happy Feet - ABC Online

Seven years ago, the small Regal Cinema at Birmingham Gardens in the western suburbs had to close.

The Regal had a loyal clientele and was devoted to the romantic idea of keeping the traditional Aussie cinema experience alive.

Despite the best efforts of a loyal band of supporters, the Regal has been unable to find a way to re-open.

But thanks to an Academy Award winning Australian movie director the fate of the cinema has changed.

George Miller who created and successfully delivered Happy Feet 2, the sequel to Happy Feet, came to the rescue.

The director of the musical adventure featuring a penguin colony needed a state of the art digital cinema for his film - but once the movie was delivered it was set to be sold.

What happened next is the making of a movie!.

Jo Smith, Director of the Regal Cinema Trust & Executive Director of the Australian Guild of Screen Composers, says it was a dream come true ...

"We will be reopening next month with state of the art equipment and digital technology to show the latest films".
